MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity 6400 processor

MediaTek’s new Dimensity 6400 chipset is a light update to the Dimensity 6300 chip released last year, which itself was a slight improvement over the 2023 Dimensity 6100+. This chip, however, has roots that go even deeper.

Characteristics of the Dimensity 6400

The Dimensity 6400 is manufactured using TSMC’s 6nm process and features an eight-core processor: 2 Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.5GHz and 6 Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0GHz. The chip also utilizes an ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU.

The chipset supports LPDDR4X memory (up to 2,133 MHz) and UFS 2.2 storage. It supports displays with resolutions up to 1080p+ and refresh rates up to 120Hz, as well as 10-bit color reproduction. The chipset’s ISP supports cameras up to 108 MP, but video resolution information has not yet been revealed. The 5G Release 16 modem delivers peak download speeds of 3.3Gbps and supports Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5.2.

Dimensity 6400

Comparison with previous chipsets

Compared to the Dimensity 6300, the newcomer got a slight improvement in the clock speed of the Cortex-A76 cores – 2.5GHz instead of 2.4GHz. The GPU and other key specifications remained at the same level. For comparison, the Helio G100 chip, also produced by TSMC on a 6nm process, has similar specifications, but with a lower clock speed on the Cortex-A76 core (2.2GHz).

Old Iron, New Devices

Although the Dimensity 6400 uses a fairly old architecture, it’s still a powerful enough chip for modern devices. This chipset will be found in new smartphones like the Realme P3x 5G, which will be unveiled tomorrow.
