Camera of the future: OMNIVISION has released a 50 MP sensor with 8K and QPD focus support

M OMNIVISION has unveiled an advanced 50-megapixel OV50X CMOS sensor aimed at flagship smartphones. The main advantage of the new product is a record-breaking 110dB dynamic range in single-frame shooting for the mobile device industry. This level of HDR was previously unattainable without multi-exposure technology.

The OV50X sensor ushers in a new era of mobile photography

OV50X utilizes a 1-inch optical format with large 1.6 micron pixels to deliver exceptional image quality even in challenging lighting conditions. Utilizing proprietary TheiaCel technology, it realizes highly dynamic range without the need for multi-exposure processing, enhancing both video capture and live preview.

At the same time, theOV50X is able to capture a wide range of images without the need for multi-exposure processing, improving both video capture and live preview.

The sensor supports 4x pixel binning, allowing it to deliver 12.5 MP at 180fps, as well as 60fps with triple-channel HDR. The OV50X is also capable of recording 8K video, supports Dual Analog Gain for HDR, and offers on-sensor crop zoom.

An added benefit is 100% phase detection autofocus (QPD) coverage for lightning-fast and accurate focusing. The sensor is based on PureCel Plus-S technology with a stack of crystals, which significantly improves light sensitivity and low-light shooting.

According to Takuritsu Lee, OMNIVISION’s marketing manager, the OV50X is designed for users who value professional shooting capabilities in a smartphone. Premium device manufacturers looking to take mobile camera quality to the next level have already started receiving test samples. Mass production will begin in the third quarter of 2025.

In the backdrop of this presentation, it was also revealed that Sony is working on its own 100MP and 200MP flagship sensors. The 100-megapixel variant is likely to appear in the Chinese brand’s smartphones based on Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 or Dimensity 9500 chips, while the 200-megapixel model – perhaps even larger than Samsung’s solution – could provide even more detail and image quality in future flagships.
