YouTube Music continues to update the playback screen interface

The YouTube Music team continues to work on the redesign of the Now Playing screen, which has been in testing since November 2024. The innovations are not yet widespread, with individual elements of the interface still undergoing A/B testing, including the placement of the track rating buttons.
Main interface changes
Compared to the 2023 version, the control bar (pause, next/previous track, repeats, and random play) is now located below the song title and artist name. The timeline retains its central position, but has been given a more “blocky” design that echoes the main YouTube app.
At the same time, the timeline is now located under the song title and artist name.
Additional action cards, including toggles between Song and Video modes, are now placed at the bottom of the screen. This part of the interface was changed back in February.

Reposition of the “Like” and “Dislike”
In the latest round of tests, YouTube Music has moved the “thumbs up” and “thumbs down” buttons from the action carousel to a separate area – they’re now two round buttons placed to the right of the track name and artist. Instead of a single block, they’re now separate interface elements.
Although it may break symmetry visually, it frees up the carousel, where more options – commenting, saving, watching videos, downloading, and sharing – are now displayed simultaneously, without the need to scroll through.
Additional features and tests
Simultaneously with the redesign, YouTube Music is introducing new control gestures. On album and playlist pages, you can now swipe right to add a track to the play queue and left to save it to a playlist.
Tests of the new interface are ongoing, with some users temporarily losing access to the redesign. This indicates an ongoing experiment that aims to create a more user-friendly and functional playback screen interface.
